COVID-19 and Your GarbageĀ 


The situation with COVID-19 has been continually evolving over the past month.  

Like the rest of the world, the waste industry is doing its best to understand this complex and evolving situation. We are taking guidance from SWANA, OSHA and other health/safety experts for the wellbeing of our employees as well as you, our customers.

We have received questions from concerned customers about how their waste and recycling collection might be impacted by the virus. Based on industry-wide best practices, we have developed the following list of ways you can help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

1. Know that all transactions and questions can be handled online or over the phone.

We have made it easy to pay your bill or sign up for auto-pay online. You can also contact customer service if you are in need of assistance. Thank you for avoiding trips to our offices.

2. Handle all contaminated waste responsibly.

Masks, gloves, wipes, and tissues should never be placed in recycling bins. Contaminated waste can infect workers who sort recyclable items by hand. Please note that recycling should still not be bagged. Bags and other plastic films get tangled in our equipment, causing serious risk of injury.

3. Wash your hands before and after touching your garbage can, and wipe down handles/lids.

There is conflicting evidence about the amount of time the COVID-19 virus can survive on hard surfaces. However, because our employees may have to touch hundreds of garbage cans in the course of a day, it is in everyone's best interest to keep your can as clean as possible. Wash your hands before taking your cans to/from the curb, and use a sanitizing wipe on the areas that are frequently touched.

4. Look for announcements from your municipality about yard waste and/or bulk collection.

Some municipalities have temporarily suspended collection of additional items. You should receive communication from your municipality, city or borough to explain any changes if they impact you.

5. Please be patient with your collection schedule.

We are doing our best to ensure our drivers and helpers are kept safe. This may result in route changes or delays. Please be assured that we take our duty seriously, both to our customers and to our employees, and we ask for your patience if your pickup is late. If your pickup has not been made by late afternoon, please call our customer service team.

As an essential service, we will continue to provide service while taking all necessary precautions. We appreciate your cooperation and support in all of these adjustments.
